John Jarrold’s Corner: Suzanne McLeod get’s another 3-Book deal!

This just in from John Jarrold:

PRESS RELEASE โ€“ SECOND THREE-BOOK WORLD RIGHTS DEAL FOR URBAN FANTASY WRITER SUZANNE MCLEOD

Jo Fletcher, Gollanczโ€™s Associate Publisher, has acquired World Rights in three more supernatural thrillers by Suzanne McLeod, for a decent five-figure sum in UK pounds. The agent was John Jarrold.

These books continue the Spellcrackers.com series set in London and star Genevieve Taylor, a Sidhe who runs into supernatural crime, dark romance and trouble at every turn. The provisional titles are THE SHIFTING PRICE OF PREY, THE HIDDEN RUNE OF IRON and THE SHARP BITE OF RITUAL.

Suzanneโ€™s first two books have been sold to Germany and the US, and have received praise from the mainstream and genre press, as well as authors including international bestseller Charlaine Harris, author of the Sookie Stackhouse vampire novels now produced for TV as TRUE BLOOD. Suzanne lives on the South Coast of England, with her husband and dogs.”

Like I told John, I haven’t yet read any of Suzanne’s novels, but since I’m becoming a huge fan of Urban Fantasy (thanks to Kate Griffin’s A Madness of Angels), I’ll be getting into them soon. ๐Ÿ™‚ Congrats to Suzanne, John and Gollancz! ๐Ÿ™‚

John Jarrold’s Corner: Author-News

Hey everyone! ๐Ÿ™‚ Yes, I’ve taken some time from the Writing Course (which is going along splendidly, by the way – note the 5000+ words I’ve written) to share some news-bits I’ve received from John Jarrold. ๐Ÿ™‚

First up, Jasper Kent has redone his website, sprucing things up a bit as well as giving us a neat, spine-tingling intro; Thirteen Years Later, the sequel to the excellent Twelve (reviewed here) will be out shortly, so head on over and check out the revamped site. ๐Ÿ™‚ Twelve will be released on the 18th of March, and you can count on a review as soon as I’ve received a copy and read it! ๐Ÿ™‚

In other news, the colossus of Urban Fantasy, China Mieville, has read (and enjoyed) the second novel in Mark Charan Newton’s The Legends of the Red Sun series, City of Ruin; Awesome stuff, right? ๐Ÿ™‚ Check out the post on Mark’s blog to see what China said. ๐Ÿ™‚

And from Chris Beckett: his tale, Johnny’s New Job, will be published in Interzone‘s March 2010 issue (no. 227), but this is a short story with a difference – it was inspired by the events of a case of child abuse (horrific, I might add – and not for the faint of heart). Check out Chris’ website here; even though it was birthed by such a tragic case, the Johnny’s New Job is certain to be an excellent tale!

And finally, here’s the cover of Jaine Fenn‘s Guardian’s of Paradise, which will be available from Gollancz in September:

On a completely unrelated-to-John-Jarrold’s-clients note, the cover for Brandon Sanderson’s The Way of Kings has been released, posted over at Tor.com by Irene Gallo; recognize the style of the artwork? If you don’t, think of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. ๐Ÿ™‚ Make of point of heading over to read the post – Michael Whelan (oops, let the cat out of the bag there, didn’t I? :-)) takes us through the process of creating the cover, too!

That’s what I’ve got for you for the time being. ๐Ÿ™‚ Until next time,

Be EPIC!

John Jarrold’s Corner: News & news from Mark C Newton!

This news was originally posted over at Realms & Galaxies: Celebrating SFF on the 21st of December 2009.

I’ve got one last batch of news for you from John Jarrold for 2009, and it really is awesome news!

PRESS RELEASE โ€“ TWO-BOOK DEAL FOR SF NOVELIST PHILIP PALMER

Bella Pagan, Commissioning Editor of Orbit UK, has acquired two new novels by British SF author Philip Palmer. The agent was John Jarrold, and the deal was for World rights.

These novels โ€“ the first is entitled HELLSHIP โ€“ are both due for delivery in 2010, and will see a concerted push by Orbit on both sides of the Atlantic in 2011.

Philipโ€™s first novel, DEBATABLE SPACE, was published in 2008, with RED CLAW following earlier this year. His work has drawn praise from the Guardian, SFX magazine and many other sources, both in print and on-line. The latter novel features in the Top Twenty SF novels published in 2009 in leading genre website SF Crowsnestโ€™s reader poll. His third SF novel, VERSION 43, comes from both Orbit UK and Orbit US in 2010.

Wonderful news for Philip! ๐Ÿ™‚ Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy, and I’m really chuffed that we’ll be reading more of his incredibly funny blend of hard SF / Space Opera! ๐Ÿ™‚

Next up, here’s the official US cover of Mark Newton’s impending entrance into the US Fantasy market – Night’s of Villjamur! (I quite like the cover, btw)

Mark is also looking back on 2009 in this post, and head on over to Pat’s blog to read an excerpt of the sequel to Nights of Villjamur, coming in 2010! ๐Ÿ™‚

John Jarrold’s Corner: US Deals for 2 Authors

This news was originally posted over at Realms & Galaxies: Celebrating SFF on the 2nd of November 2009.

Hey everyone, here’s some great news for you all from John Jarrold, concerning two awesome authors. ๐Ÿ™‚

First off, announced on the 29th of October:

PRESS RELEASE โ€“TWO-BOOK US RIGHTS DEAL FOR BRITISH NOVELIST

Helen Edwards, Rights Director at Transworld UK, has sold US rights in two historical vampire novels by UK novelist Jasper Kent for a good five-figure sum in US dollars.

World rights in the novels, which open with Jasperโ€™s debut TWELVE, published very successfully in the UK by Transworld in January 2009 (it is the second-highest-selling trade paperback debut novel right across UK publishing in 2009), were acquired by Simon Taylor from John Jarrold in 2008. The sequel, THIRTEEN YEARS LATER, will appear in the UK in March 2010.

โ€˜I’m thrilled to be welcoming Jasper Kent into the Pyr fold,โ€™ says editorial director Lou Anders. โ€˜TWELVE is a magnificent blend of a historical novel and a dark fantasy novel, that could appeal equally to readers both in and out of genre. Jasper is a skilled storyteller, whose compelling prose had me hooked from his opening chapter. The book is “un-put-downable,” and I love that he has brought back a real sense of threat and danger to the classic monsters, something that has been lacking with too many vampires lately. I cannot wait to spring this on US readers.โ€™

โ€˜Jasper and I are delighted with this deal, and looking forward to working with Lou and his colleagues,โ€™ said John Jarrold. โ€˜Pyr is a terrific company, who publish many of my favourite authors, and Louโ€™s enthusiasm has to be seen to be believed!โ€™

Awesome news, but I for one am intrigued as to what the new US cover art will look like. ;-)Congrats to both Jasper and John! The US is gonna love the Voordalak!

Then we’ve got a deal that I’ve just (as in 5 minutes ago) received word of:

PRESS RELEASE โ€“ A SECOND TWO-BOOK US DEAL FOR STEPHEN HUNT

Tara Hiatt, Head of International Rights at HarperCollins UK, has concluded a second two-book deal for US rights in novels by UK fantasy novelist Stephen Hunt with Claire Eddy at Tor in New York, for a good five-figure sum in US dollars.

THE RISE OF THE IRON MOON and SECRETS OF THE FIRE SEA are the third and fourth novels of six by Hunt in which Voyagerโ€™s Deputy Publishing Director Sarah Hodgson acquired World rights from literary agent John Jarrold; they follow on from the very successful novels in which Tor acquired US rights previously: THE COURT OF THE AIR and THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE WAVES.

This is really cool news, too! ๐Ÿ™‚ I haven’t had the chance to read any of Stephen‘s work yet, but it’s great to see him making the leap into the US. ๐Ÿ™‚ And yes, let’s keep an eye on that cover artwork, shall we? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Be EPIC!

John Jarrold’s Corner: 2-Book Deal for Paul Kearney!

Remember way back (well, not so long ago, it was only last year) I reviewed Paul Kearney’s The Ten Thousand and also got the exclusive on the title of the second Macht book? Well, guys and girls, there’s not only going to be a second book in the series, but a third, too! ๐Ÿ™‚

Check out the awesome announcement:

PRESS RELEASE โ€“ TWO-BOOK DEAL FOR FANTASY NOVELIST PAUL KEARNEY

Jonathan Oliver, commissioning editor of Solaris Books since the imprintโ€™s acquisition from Games Workshop by Rebellion earlier this month, has acquired two new novels by Paul Kearney, set on the same world as his successful Solaris novel THE TEN THOUSAND. The agent was John Jarrold, and the deal was for UK/US rights.

These novels, entitled CORVUS and KINGS OF MORNING, are due for delivery in 2010 and early 2011 respectively.

โ€œThe immediacy of Paulโ€™s prose and characterisation always puts me in mind of David Gemmell, who I was lucky enough to publish in the mid-1990s,โ€ said John Jarrold. โ€œWith THE TEN THOUSAND he has created a world ripe for re-visiting. Canโ€™t wait to read these books! And Iโ€™m very pleased to have concluded my first deal with Jon Oliver and the โ€˜newโ€™ Solaris.โ€

28th September 2009

***

Awesome news or what?! ๐Ÿ™‚ I will honestly say that I was really worried when Solaris was sold; kudos to everyone involved in not letting such an awesome imprint sink and in making sure that the authors were all looked after! Congrats to Paul, John and Jonathan, as well as all the readers out there – we’re in for some awesome stuff! ๐Ÿ™‚

John Jarrold’s Corner & new Angry Robot Signings!

Hey guys and girls, some great news from John Jarrold! Here’s the contents of the press-release for you:

PRESS RELEASE โ€“ SIGNIFICANT PRE-EMPTIVE DEAL FOR BRITISH NOVELIST

Nick Johnston of Quercus has paid a significant advance for a four-book series by UK novelist Rod Rees. The pre-emptive deal, with agent John Jarrold, is for World Rights.

The series is titled THE DEMI-MONDE, and is set in a wonderfully imagined virtual world โ€“ the Demi-Monde of the title. Originally conceived by the US military as a training ground for their troops in the twenty-first century facing street fighting and enemies who use guerrilla tactics, rather than modern technology-based armies, the Demi-Monde was created by the worldโ€™s first quantum computer. Young singer Ella Thomas is sent there to rescue a VIP (she ticks all the boxes to blend into the world, which has a late-Victorian technology base) and discovers the world and its thirty million inhabitants, or โ€˜avatarsโ€™, are all too real. Especially those who run the worldโ€™s city-states, based on famous human monsters such as Reinhard Heydrich, Shaka Zulu, Empress Wu, Godfrey de Bouillon, Selim the Grim and Lavrentii Beria, with whom the world was seeded to make it more of a testโ€ฆand that is only the beginning. The first volume will be published in 2011. There is already a fascinating website at www.thedemi-monde.com

โ€œRodโ€™s imagination and invention are quite outstanding,โ€ said John Jarrold. โ€œHis characters leap off the page and his storylines fascinated me. This went out to mainstream publishers, as well as SF editors, since it has huge crossover potential to people who donโ€™t necessarily think of themselves as โ€˜SF readersโ€™, fans of films like THE MATRIX and the novels of Michael Crichton. Nick and his colleagues obviously felt the same, because within seventy-two hours of this project being submitted to major publishers in London and New York, he rang me with a wonderful pre-emptive offer. After discussion we came to terms, and Iโ€™m delighted to do my first deal with him, and with Quercus. Congratulations to Nick โ€“ and to those, including David North, Jon Riley and Ron Beard, who backed him so positively and strongly.โ€

Nick Johnston added: โ€œIn THE DEMI-MONDE Rod Rees has created one of the most deliriously exciting worlds that I have encountered in fiction. It is an utterly believable place where anything goes and some of historyโ€™s most fascinating figures and cruellest tyrants rub shoulders with an almost extravagantly lifelike cast of characters. The fact that he uses this to explore some of lifeโ€™s deepest dilemmas and suffuses it all with such a rich vein of humour is just the icing on the cake.โ€

Sounds like it’ll be a damn good and intriguing read! ๐Ÿ™‚

Check out John’s site here!

John Jarrold’s Corner: New Book Deal for Jasper Kent!

This is old news already (my dad is visiting from Australia so blogging took a back seat for a bit), but I’m re-posting the news here because it’s really awesome news and I’m incredibly chuffed for Jasper! ๐Ÿ™‚

PRESS RELEASE โ€“ NEW DEAL FOR BRITISH NOVELIST

Simon Taylor of Transworld Publishers in London has concluded a World Rights deal with John Jarrold, for a third historical vampire novel by UK author Jasper Kent. This follows on the successful publication of Kentโ€™s debut, TWELVE, set in Russia during the Napoleonic Wars, earlier this year.

The third book takes up the story at the time of the Crimean War, after the second novel in the sequence โ€“ THIRTEEN YEARS LATER, which is coming from Bantam Press early in 2010. This third volume will see publication in 2011.

โ€œJasperโ€™s debut has already been a remarkable success, with four reprints of the trade paperback within a few months of publication and over thirteen thousand copies now in print,โ€ said John Jarrold. โ€œSimon and his colleagues at Transworld have done a wonderful job, and word of mouth has obviously been very strong. Itโ€™s great to have this deal in place for an author who is already going places.โ€

To check out more info about Jasper, check out his website here and his blog here, and give John a visit too at this link. ๐Ÿ™‚

Congrats to Jasper and to John, to the publishers and to readers! ๐Ÿ™‚ Awesome news! ๐Ÿ™‚

John Jarrold’s Corner: US Deal for Mark C Newton!

This is awesome, AWESOME news! ๐Ÿ™‚

nights-of-villjamur3

PRESS RELEASE โ€“TWO-BOOK US RIGHTS DEAL FOR NEW BRITISH FANTASY WRITER

Margaret Halton, Rights Director at Pan Macmillan, has sold US rights in two fantasy novels by UK novelist Mark Charan Newton to Chris Schluep for a good five-figure sum in US dollars.

World rights in the novels, which open with Markโ€™s mainstream debut NIGHTS OF VILLJAMUR (to be published in hardback in the UK in June 2009), were acquired by Peter Lavery at Tor UK from John Jarrold in 2008.

Chris Schluep said: โ€˜I am so excited to be publishing NIGHTS OF VILLJAMUR, which is an absolutely wonderful book, and Iโ€™m very much looking forward to launching the U.S. career of an important and talented new writer in the field. Iโ€™m convinced that Mark has a bright future ahead of him; heโ€™s one of those writers that you come across only on occasion . . .โ€™

โ€˜Chris acted quickly and with great enthusiasm. Mark and I are delighted, and looking forward to working with him and his colleagues at Del Rey, who I know well,โ€™ said John Jarrold.

I’m busy reading Nights at the moment (and believe me, it’s getting more time between the novels I’m juggling) and this is well-deserved! Watch out, US – Mark Newton is going to take on the big guns! ๐Ÿ™‚

This info courtesy of John Jarrold (thank you, as always!). ๐Ÿ™‚ Check out John’s site here, and Mark’s site here!
