Meme with Relish!

I saw this over at Amanda’s Floor to Ceiling Books and thought I’d join in the fun. I have to agree with Amanda – this could definitely lead to some awesome book-discussions. 🙂 Hope this meme get’s you talking!

(By the way, Amanda saw the Meme over at Un:Bound)

1) One Book that Changed Your Life

Sheesh, hectic question, this! Thinking about it, though, there’s only one book that has really, truly led to my life changing – Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. I read it when I was nine (had the obligatory week-long nightmare, yes) and this book, more than any other, has led me into my love of SFF and, consequently, to writing. (read more about my writing endeavours here)

2) One Book You Have to Read More Than Once

Hmmm, this would probably have to 2 books that I re-read at least every two years: Necroville by Ian McDonald (fucking awesome) and Star Wars The New Jedi Order Traitor by Matthew Stover (one of the most layered and dark Star Wars novels out there, sublime).

3) One Book You’d Want on a Desert Island

At the moment I’ll have to go with Justin Cronin’s The Passage. Yep, it’s that good! (and bloody thick, too, so long enough to keep me busy)

4) Two Books That Made You Laugh

Without a doubt, one of them would be Philip Palmer’s Debatable Space – awesomely funny as well as a sprawling space-opera laced with excellent science! Second book? Hmmm… Sure, I laughed reading The Colour of Magic but that’s a given. Okay, yep, second book would have to be Tome of the Undergates by Sam Sykes; not only is it awesomely funny, too, but it’s a deep, deep book and an epic adventure. 🙂

5) One Book That Made You Cry

Another difficult one, this, since I didn’t cry my eyes out but the scene did bring tears to my eyes: Memories of Ice by Steven Erikson – yes, the scene where an awesome Bridgeburner is cut down by the immortal bastard. 😦

6) One Book You Wish You’d Written

Man, there’s absolutely no doubt for me here – Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson; it kicked off one of the most intense, debated, infuriating and epic series’ in the history of Epic Fantasy and also set’s the author up for the mother of all fails, should The Crippled God bomb – that’s the kind of pressure that would probably kill me, but hey!

7) One Book You Wish You’d NEVER Written

Another difficult one, this; I’ll seriously have to get back to you…

8) Two Books You Are Currently Reading

Will focus on a small-press book -Nyphron Rising by Michael J Sullivan (very good so far, more measured and thoughtful than the previous books) and Allison Brennan’s Original Sin – huge fun! 🙂

9) One Book You’ve Been Meaning to Read

Yes, I know, I know…

That’s me! 🙂 I hope to see this meme spread far and wide, so have fun! 🙂

Grasping for the Wind: Inside the Blogosphere

The man behind the most innovative blogosphere memes the internet has ever seen (in my opinion) has started a new series called ‘Inside the Blogosphere’; John Ottinger III has been running these features for a while now (it started with ‘Ask the Bloggers‘ and became ‘Inside the Blogosphere‘) and the latest edition asks the question, Who Introduced You to the Love of Literature?

John asked a couple of bloggers to share their ‘Introductions’ and I offered my thoughts; mine is the last of the bunch, but do read the entire post – many of the best bloggers / reviewers in the blogosphere offered their thoughts, too. 🙂

Be EPIC!

Spotlight: John Ottinger III – Grasping for the Wind

This review was originally published over at Realms & Galaxies: Celebrating SFF on the 12th of October 2009.

Everybody should know who John Ottinger III is, and if you don’t, then you’re either a newbie to this whole blogging thing or you run a non-SFF blog; you may be forgiven (emphasis on ‘may’) if you spread the word of what he’s done (and continues to do). 🙂

For example, the SF / F / H Reviewer Link Up Meme, 2nd Edition. John set up a database of most (if not all) of the SFF / H blogs out there, inculding some non-english blogs, so there’s no excuse when you’re bored – if you’re looking for blogs that focus on SF, check the list; want fantasy (epic, heroic, etc), check the list; urban fantasy? Yep, they’re all there too. And much more besides! 🙂

When you’ve decided to put this list on your own blog, visit John’s new-look Grasping for the Wind blog (with the link above) and follow the instructions. 🙂 Here’s the list for your viewing pleasure!

Massive Blog-LinkUp & 101 Best Fantasy Books!

“It’s about damn time!” I hear you shouting. 🙂 Yep, that it most definitely is! 🙂 A round of applause for John over at Grasping for the Wind please! For those of you who have absolutely no idea who I’m talking about, here’s the low-down:

A while ago, while this very blog you’re reading looked a bit (okay, a lot) different and the brunt of the world-wide recession had not yet hit, John created a review-blogger link-up meme that took the blogosphere by storm. This meme raged through blogs that reviewed Speculative Fiction (yes, the range was that wide), and pretty soon, the list had gotten so big that you would need to take a few days off work to go through them. 🙂 I was lucky enough to have been a part of that meme, and then this meme also became something else – a song, written and performed by another awesome John (follow the link and have a listen, you’ll love it!) that was probably one of the coolest things ever to hit the blogosphere. 🙂

John (Wind-Grasping John) has returned with the second edition of the meme – which I’ve got below this text for your viewing pleasure! 🙂 If you don’t have time to check out all the blogs, make some time! This list represents plenty of the best reviewers and lovers of SpecFic out there. 🙂 Cream of the crop, guys and girls, cream of the crop. 🙂

Now, how’s that?! 🙂 Awesome, John, absolutely awesome! 🙂 So, have you downloaded the song? You have? Cool, start playing it then, and then click this link – it’ll take you to The Crotchety Old Fan, and the Interactive Version. 🙂 So as you listen to the song, you can click through and have a look at the blogs at the same time. But have your fastest finger ready! 🙂

Okay, next up, vote for your favourite Fantasy Books! 🙂 This is an awesome initiative given life by Jo and Bella! Not only will the 101 Fantasy Books be decided by those who read and love them (YOU), but there’s also a chance to WIN! So, head on over and vote!

One last thing (I know this is a huge post, without a doubt the biggest ever on this blog), but this was just too cool to pass up – Jo and Bella have set up a cool meme, so I’m doing my bit to get it spread around:

1. What is your favourite favourite fantasy series?

Yikes – okay, let’s put it this way: Whoever wins the duel between Rand and Quick Ben will decide which series is the best. 🙂

2. What is your favourite fantasy character?

Also a difficult one… I’ll have to settle for a top 3: In no particular order, Anomander Rake, Mat Cauthon, Thomas Cale. 🙂 Anomander is the epitome of absolute badassness, Mat is either the guy with the worst luck or the best luck, and Thomas Cale is absolutely deadly and terrifying, but so sadly clueless (through no fault of his own).

3. What is your favourite fantasy creature?

Probably a Fade (being able to see like a hawk without having to bother with eyes and being able to travel through shadows) but then again, Erikson’s dragons are sooo cool! 🙂

4. What is your favourite fantasy world?

Hands down, this would the world that Steven Erikson and Ian C Esslemont have created – I’ve never gotten such a sense of deep history from any other fiction I’ve ever read, amazing stuff!

5. What is your favourite fantasy “magic” (i.e. The Will and the Word in David Eddings’ Belgariad series)?

Wielding the One Power, Saidin. 🙂 Without the Taint, of course!

There we go – if you want to participate in the meme, follow this link and read the instructions. 🙂

Okay, that’s it for me fore today – I’m struggling to decide between posting my review of Godspeaker Bk 2: The Riven Kingdom by Karen Miller or District 9; what do you think? 🙂

Be EPIC!

My Blog is Fabulous! :-)

fabulousblogaward2

Yè, you read right! 🙂 Thanks to Graeme, my blog is fabulous, too! 🙂 Thanks Graeme!

But, it’s all well and good stating that – once you’re nominated, you have to stick to the rules, so…

Five things I can’t live without:

1) Star Wars, be it the movies, games like Knights of the Old Republic, the odd comic I find, my collection of novels, 🙂

2) Cigarettes. Yè, I’m a smoker, have been for about ten years now. I know, I know… 🙂

3) My Blackberry – It’s imperative to have a phone like this in a third-world country! 🙂

4) My girlfriend, Leana! 🙂 This month our 4-year Anniversary is coming up, and I’m still head-over-heels in love and still the happiest guy on the planet!

5) My books. I once had to sell off all the books I had when we moved (I was about 16 and we just didn’t have space), but never again. Without books I would probably die. Yè, I’m pretty sure of that! 😉

And now I have to tell you all about 5 blogs which I consider to be fabulous, too! 🙂

1) Blood of the Muse

2) Fantasy Debut

3) Nethspace

4) The Antick Musings of G.B.H. Hornswoggler, Gent

5) The Road Not Taken

There we go! 🙂

Be Fantastic!

John’s Book Reviewer’s Meme!

John over at Grasping for the Wind has had another awesome meme idea! 🙂 I’ll let John explain for you:

Here is how it works: Find a favorite book, movie, or videogame review (Science fiction and fantasy related) that you have written, no matter where it was posted, and add it to the following list. Make sure to repost the whole list, because in doing so, we accumulate what the reviewers themselves think is their best work, and give each other some linkages, increasing everyone’s rankings.

Again, I plan to keep track of all the blogs that link back to me, and I will add the review of choice to the list. If you are one of the early adopters, you can check back here occasionally and add the new ones that get added to the list at your blog or website.

Got it? Simple and elegant, I’d say. 🙂

So, here’s the list as it stands now on GFtW:

The Book Review Meme @ Grasping for the Wind
1. Grasping for the Wind – INFOQUAKE by David Louis Edelman
2. Age 30+ … A Lifetime of Books – A COMPANION TO WOLVES by Sarah Monette and Elizabeth Bear
3. Dragons, Heroes and Wizards – ASSASSIN’S APPRENTICE by Robin Hobb
4. Walker of Worlds – THE TEMPORAL VOID by Peter F Hamilton
5. Neth Space – TOLL THE HOUNDS by Steven Erikson
6. Dark in the Dark – GHOST STORIES OF AN ANTIQUARY by M.R. James
7. A Dribble of Ink – THE SHADOW OF THE WIND by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
8. Fantasy Book News & Reviews – EMPRESS by Karen Miller
9. Fantasy Debut – ACACIA by David Anthony Durham Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Overall Review Afterthought
10. Davebrendon’s Fantasy & Sci-Fi Weblog – Black Ships by Jo Graham

Let’s get the linkage going and make this another huge meme! 🙂

Be Fantastic!

**UPDATE

Something happened and my review wasn’t added to the list, so check out the proper list at Grasping for the Wind.
