Spotlight: Steve Wheeler’s ‘A FURY OF ACES’

13 Sep

Thought I’d bring this to your attention – came across it on Facebook, ‘liked’ the Page, and saw some truly cool models; and then found out that these models were born in the imagination of New Zealand author Steve Wheeler.

Steve is the author of ‘Burnt Ice‘ and ‘Crystal Venom‘, books 1 and 2 of his ‘A Fury of Aces‘ series.

Crystal Venom

Awesome covers, eh? The first book’s cover was done by the incredible John Howe and Steve worked with John on the second book’s cover.

I’m definitely looking forward to reading these books – here’s some background to the series to get you interested:

A Fury of Aces series is set in the future (post mankind’s exodus from earth) within the Human Sphere (11 human-inhabited solar systems).

It centers around battles between different corporate forces (Gjomviks) over new or alien technology, minerals and biologicall resources. The battles are broadcast and controlled by the media now known as The Games Board, who in turn are overseen by the governing body, The Administration. A collective of scientists, The Haulers, provide navigation and communication through the Human Sphere of Influence which is an area approximately 50 light years across.

The technologies leveraged in battle and navigation, such as ships, entities and weapons, borrow from existing and past scientific discoveries so have the feel of our current world.

Current human interests and rituals remain largely intact within the stories. And, although human life has evolved to include hybrids, reincarnation and life-lines, none of these options are posed as easy or cost-free.

The stories explore past, current and emerging world issues including terrorism, piracy, consumerism and ecological issues. While the innate tensions between The Games Board, Gjomviks, The Administration and The Haulers groups create compelling drama.

And here are some pics of those models I mentioned… 🙂

And the cover-design of a movie-pitch for a novella titled ‘Neelam‘ – looks insanely cool!

Here’s the blurb for book 1, Burnt Ice:

SUPERB SPACE ADVENTURE FROM A FRESH NEW VOICE. In our future worlds the Administration rules the Sphere of Humankind, the Games Board sanctions and funds wars and conflicts, and the Haulers′ Collective roams the space routes like the caravanners of old. Marko and his crew of fellow soldier-engineers are sent to investigate an unknown planet. When they encounter strange artefacts and an intelligent but aggressive squid species, they are forced to embark on a perilous journey far from the Sphere. They will have to survive not only other alien encounters but also their own Administration′s deadly manipulations. Political factions and galactic media moguls vie for power … and money.

It’s already available – order your copies at the following links:

Amazon US, Amazon UK, for South African readers, and from Harper Collins

I’m not going to give you the blurb for book 2, because you need to get book 1 and read it first! 😉

So what are you waiting for? Get your copies and get introduced to an exciting new voice in Hard SF! If you’re also on Goodreads, connect with Steve there and you can also check out this Q & A with Steve, posted 4 days ago over at Harper Voyager.

Until next time,

Be EPIC!
